The InterNIC Briefcase Service: Guidelines for Network Information Centers
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

InterNIC Information Services

InterNIC Information Services provides support to network information
center (NIC) and help-desk staff located at primary, secondary and
higher-education institutions and at government research laboratories.
Services include the Scout Report, the NSF Network News, the
Net-happenings mailing list, and the InterNIC InfoGuide, an online
information server.

One service specifically designed for local NIC and help-desk staff
(hereafter referred to as NICs) is the InterNIC Briefcase Service. The
InterNIC Briefcase Service has been designed to assist local NICs in
supporting new Internet users, and is to be used in conjunction with
local NIC services.

The InterNIC Briefcase Service

The InterNIC Briefcase Service is a collection of concise, one-page
Internet information documents developed and maintained by the InterNIC
to be used by local NICs in support of their new Internet users. The
document is made available as a single-copy, photo-ready, hardcopy
"master" to be reproduced and distributed to local users in conjunction
with local NIC services. The Briefcase documents are concise explanations
of various Internet topics and are designed as starting points for
further reading .

Guidelines for Use of the Briefcase

The Briefcase Service is available at no-cost to NIC organizations at
primary, secondary and higher-education institutions or at government
research laboratories. The no-cost license will become effective after
the NIC organization has completed the simple Briefcase Service
Enrollment, outlined below. NIC enrollment ensures that you are kept
informed of new developments in the Briefcase and other NIC related
services.

Questions about the Briefcase Service, the NIC Enrollment procedures, or
any InterNIC services can be sent to the InterNIC Reference Desk at
refdesk@internic.net.

For a list of instructions for retrieving information about all InterNIC
services send mail to info@internic.net. Leave the message blank and a
file will be automatically sent to your mailbox.

InterNIC Briefcase Service
Enrollment Procedures

A goal of InterNIC Information Services is to assist Network Information
Centers (NIC) staff members in providing services to their Internet
users. Our focus is on NIC staff associated with educational institutions
and research organizations; however.

The InterNIC Briefcase Service provides NICs with the use of InterNIC
developed end-user documentation; regular notification of services and
resources that will make Internet user support easier, including those
provided by the InterNIC and by other organizations; and enhanced
information sharing and collaboration with other NICs.

Briefcase Service Enrollment is simple:

1. Complete the brief form below and return it to refdesk@internic.net.

To receive an electronic version of this document, send mail to
mailserv@is.internic.net and in the body of the message type: send
/faq/briefcase

2. Consent to be added to the nics@internic.net mailing list, a
moderated, distribution-only electronic mailing list that distributes
announcements of services and resources relevant to Network Information
Centers. Volume on the nics mailing list is 1-2 messages per week at
most, usually less.

3. Not required, but highly recommended: Include information about your
NIC in the Briefcase before duplication and distribution, including
services offered and contact information. (In the current version of the
Briefcase, the entire inside front cover of the master is left blank for
that purpose.)

4. Not required, but highly recommended: provide a profile for your NIC
in the NIC Locator database, an online, searchable, and growing resource
containing information about 70 NICs around the world. The NIC Locator
can be used by NIC staff and end users to search for contact information
or services offered by a given NIC. Additional information about NIC
Locator and instructions for entering a profile of your NIC into the
database are included at the end of this document.

Completing the form below and returning it to the InterNIC Reference Desk
(refdesk@is.internic.net) will satisfy items 1 and 2 above. The Reference
Desk will confirm receipt of the information and your enrollment with the
InterNIC.

Please also complete the NIC Locator profile and send it to InterNIC
Directory and Database Services (debbieh@.internic.net). You will receive
confirmation of your profile entry into the NIC Locator.

Send questions about the InterNIC and Briefcase Service Enrollment to
refdesk@internic.net.

NIC Locator Database Fact Sheet

The Network Information Center (NIC) Locator database is a service of
InterNIC Directory and Database Services and the Network Information
Services Infrastructure (NISI) Working Group of the Internet Engineering
Task Force (IETF).The objective for this database is to maintain
comprehensive, up-to-date information on the services and expertise
available at the many NICs providing service to Internet users. This
database is intended as a resource for NICs and the general Internet user
community to ensure that Internet users can promptly locate the correct
NIC and NIC resources.

NIC Locator is a collection of ascii text files stored on the InterNIC
Directory and Database Services (DS) server. Each file contains
information for a single network information center. It is NISI's and the
InterNIC's goal to get information from as many NICs as possible and to
keep this information up-to-date.

Any NIC that provides service to Internet users may be listed in this
database. If you are a contact for a NIC and would like to have your NIC
